Pap Smear
Pap Smear
A Pap smear, also known as a Pap test, is a procedure to diagnose cervical cancer in women. This test helps identify the presence of precancerous or cancerous cells on your cervix, the opening of the uterus. During the test, a professional collects cells from the cervix.
At Olive Health Care & Diagnostics, our women’s health experts provide routine Pap Smear test services who have an abnormal Pap Smear. Our lab is equipped with highly advanced equipment where the samples are checked under a microscope for cancer. Early detection of pre-cancer cells helps prevent cervical cancer in women.
A powerful cervical cancer screening tool
Cervical cancer is very common among women and it’s been a reason for millions of deaths in women. Since 1950, when the Pap Smear test appeared first, the number of cervical cancer has dropped significantly. The experts claim that treating cervical cancer is easier when it is detected early. A Pap smear can identify abnormal cervical cells that have the potential to become cancer.
Pap Spear test is also useful for the identification of infection and inflammation in the vagina.
Who Can Consider Getting a Pap Smear Test?
There can be certain situations when your doctor may recommend getting a Pap Smear test, such as:
- After a total hysterectomy—If you have recently got your uterus removal done including the cervix, your doctor may ask if you need to continue having Pap smears.
- Older age—It is usually suggested for older women, above 65 years, to get a Pap Smear test done. It is even more important if their previous tests for cervical cancer have been negative.
It is recommended to discuss your options with the doctor and then decides which test works best for you, based on your risk factors and health conditions. In the case of women, sexually active with multiple partners, Pap testing may be mandatory.
